Here are example and practice problems on point slope form.
Example 1) Write the point slope equation of the point (2, 6) and slope of 1/2.Then solve.
Y - 6 = 1/2(x - 2)
Step 1) y - 6 = 1/2(x - 2)
Step 2) y - 6 = 1/2x - 1
Step 3) y - 6 = 1/2x - 1
+ 6 + 6
-----------------------------------
y = 1/2x + 5 <------ your answer
If you don't get the the slope and all they give is two points you would have to use the slope formula in order to get it into point slope form and solve. The slope formula is Y2-Y1 over X2-X1 which can look like this Y2-Y1/X2-X1.
Example 2) Use the slope formula to get the points into point slope form in order to solve.
(4,5) & (3,7)
Step 1) 7-5 /3-4 = 2 /-1 = -2 /1
Step 2) y - 5 = -2 /1(x - 4)
Step 3) y - 5 = -2 /1x - 8
+5 +5
-------------------------------------
y = -2 /1x - 3 <----------- your answer
Problem 1) Write the point slope equation of the point (5,7) and the slope 1/2. Then solve.
[ Remember to distribute the 1/2 to the parenthesis! ]
Problem 2) Write the point slope equation of the point (4,8) and the slope 2/4. Then solve.
Y - 6 = 1/2(x - 2)
Step 1) y - 6 = 1/2(x - 2)
Step 2) y - 6 = 1/2x - 1
Step 3) y - 6 = 1/2x - 1
+ 6 + 6
